Healthcare

Presentation

Fraud is Not a Trade Secret

Theranos promised to revolutionize the healthcare industry, raised nearly $1B in funding, attained a $9B valuation, and assembled a high powered board of directors of former secretaries of state, secretaries of defense, 4 star generals, and senators. Tyler was 22 years old, fresh out of college, and eager to join a company that was being touted as “the apple of healthcare.” He quickly realized, however, that behind the facade of a charismatic founder, powerful board, high profile investors, and magazine cover stories, Theranos was built on lies. Tyler Shultz will be recounting his experiences as he navigated complex ethical, regulatory, legal, and personal dilemmas as he exposed one of the biggest corporate frauds since Enron.

Pitch Competition

Render Capital Competition

Building a startup is hard. Funding it is oftentimes harder.
We launched the Render Competition to make venture-style funding more accessible to early-stage startups. We want to support the high-potential startups that need that initial seed money to build out and start scaling their solutions.
The Render Competition invests $100,000 into eight companies each year, encouraging their growth within and beyond our region. We cast a wide net, opening up applications to startups from anywhere, and then our community of judges work to identify the eight, most promising companies. The winners are required to locate within the Greater Louisville region and our team and network of partners will provide tailored support.

This session explores self, the limits of our thinking, the obstacles that hamper our ability to expand our thinking capacity and building the relationships needed for startup success.

Taking on the Entrepreneurial Racial Wealth Gap: How Business Attorneys Can Be Part of the Solution

Black entrepreneurs tend to make decisions in the business-ideation stage that are likely to keep their businesses small. These businesses are not failing (foundering) in the traditional sense (lack of capital or lack of flexibility). These businesses are failing to scale. With a basic understanding of “scaling” and the “owner mindset”, attorneys can assist all businesses with “thinking big” and support them along the journey of entrepreneurship and wealth creation.

Anti-Goals & the 4-Day Work Week

Anti-Goals and the 4-Day Work Week are two methodologies we live and work by at Kale & Flax, focusing more on identifying what we don’t want our culture, work, passions to be, to truly make room for us to discover what we truly want. Going against the grain, we embraced the 4-Day Work Week over three years ago, and have nearly 2x’ed our revenue year after year, along with 100% talent retention 19 months in a row. It’s time to reimagine how our work minds are wired, and our two approaches can easily become tools for the modern work era you’re entering.
